MYR History & Military Heritage
Originally built as a Air Force Base in 1940, the military history of Myrtle Beach International Airport is still apparent in existing hangars. In fact, the former General Aviation terminal was formerly Base Operations for the AFB squadrons. This rich heritage positions us uniquely to understand the needs of government aviation services.
In 1993, when the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base was closed, plans were made to develop the area for civilian use. The MYR General Aviation Terminal was opened to welcome general aviation passengers and has grown ever since into a premier FBO destination.
The MYR GAT still welcomes significant military traffic and is often used as a strategic re-fueling station for various military exercises. We are fully equipped to handle DOD contract fuel requirements and provide quick turn refueling for tactical aircraft.
Now, you will find modern facilities, brand new T-hangars, and an upgraded ramp capable of accommodating both corporate jets and military transport aircraft.
